Xtreme Weather Radar (the "App") is a web application owned and operated by Bromwell-Poe Enterprises, LLC ("BP ENT," "the Company," "we," "us," or "our") and its associated division, Xtreme Weather. These Terms of Service (the "Terms") govern your access to and use of the App, including acceptable use, availability, and legal disclaimers. By accessing or using the App, you agree to be bound by these Terms.
The App is intended to be used for tracking weather conditions, events, or other meteorological phenomena using the tools built into the App. The App is not intended to provide life-saving information, and the Company does not warrant or guarantee the accuracy of any information provided. Users of the App should always reference and act on guidance issued by local and federal authorities, notably the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS), for decisions affecting life, health, or property.
The App displays weather data sourced in whole or in part from the National Weather Service (NWS) and from the mPING (Meteorological Phenomena Identification Near the Ground) program, among other third-party providers listed in the About section. These are third-party data sources, and the Company does not control, verify, or guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or timeliness of data originating from them. Use of mPING data within the App is subject to the applicable mPING terms of use, including any attribution requirements. The Company disclaims all responsibility for errors, delays, or omissions in third-party data, and for any decisions made in reliance on that data.
The App is provided as a convenience tool and is offered "as-is" and "as available." The Company does not guarantee uninterrupted, timely, secure, or error-free availability, and may update, modify, suspend, or discontinue the App, in whole or in part, at any time and without prior notice or liability.
The App and its tools shall not be used for criminal activity or malicious purposes. This includes, without limitation: using the App for harassment; attempting to gain unauthorized access to ("hack") the App or its servers; engaging in any other form of cybercrime; or any other conduct that could reasonably be considered abuse. Violation of this section may result in immediate suspension or termination of your access to the App, and the Company may notify law enforcement or other relevant authorities where appropriate.
The Company reserves the right to suspend or terminate your access to the App at any time, with or without notice, for conduct that violates these Terms, is harmful to other users, the Company, or third parties, or for any other reason at the Company's sole discretion. Upon termination, your right to use the App will immediately cease.
The App, including its software, design, radar overlays, graphics, branding, trademarks, and all associated content, is the property of Bromwell-Poe Enterprises, LLC or its licensors and is protected by applicable intellectual property laws. Except for the limited license to use the App for its intended purpose, no right, title, or interest in the App is transferred to you.
THE APP IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. THE COMPANY DOES NOT WARRANT THAT THE APP WILL BE ACCURATE, RELIABLE, UNINTERRUPTED, OR ERROR-FREE.
Bromwell-Poe Enterprises, LLC is not liable for any loss of data, business interruption, loss of life or property, or any other direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of or inability to use the App. Your use of the App is at your own risk, to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law.
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Bromwell-Poe Enterprises, LLC, its officers, employees, and affiliates from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses, including reasonable attorneys' fees, arising out of or in any way connected with your misuse of the App or your violation of these Terms.
These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Indiana, without regard to its conflict of law principles. Any disputes arising under these Terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in Indiana.

If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, that provision shall be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions shall remain in full force and effect. These Terms constitute the entire agreement between you and the Company regarding the App.
Bromwell-Poe Enterprises, LLC reserves the right to update these Terms at any time. Continued use of the App after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
Make sure station markers are on, then click any marker on the map. WSR-88D sites are purple, terminal (TDWR) sites are yellow, the selected site is green, and a site that has not reported in 15 minutes turns red.
Level III is the pre-processed product the NWS distributes: smaller, quicker, one product per tilt. Level II is the raw volume straight off the radar, with finer resolution and every moment the radar measured, including the dual-pol fields. Level II is heavier to load but shows more.
Reflectivity is precipitation intensity. Velocity is motion toward or away from the radar, which is how rotation is spotted. Correlation coefficient tells rain apart from debris and hail. Differential reflectivity describes drop shape and size. Spectrum width shows turbulence. Hydrometeor classification names the precipitation type, and the accumulation products total rainfall.
Switch to velocity and look for green (toward the radar) pressed hard against red (away) over a small area. That couplet is the signature of a rotating updraft. Tighter and stronger means more concerning, and it matters most at the lowest tilts, closest to the ground.
The radar scans in a cone, sweeping a circle at one elevation angle before stepping up to the next. Tilt 1 is the lowest and closest to the ground. Because the beam climbs as it travels, a distant echo on tilt 1 is already thousands of feet up: what you see far away is happening well above the surface.
A full volume takes roughly 4 to 6 minutes, faster in precipitation mode than in clear air. The app checks for new scans continuously and will chime when one lands, if you turn that on in Radar Settings.
Usually the beam is overshooting: rain is falling aloft but evaporating before it reaches you. It can also be clutter (buildings, terrain), birds and insects in clear air, or a temperature inversion bending the beam into the ground. Correlation coefficient is the quickest way to tell biology and clutter from real rain.
Radar is line of sight. Mountains block the beam, and the further you are from a site the higher the beam has already climbed, so low-level storm structure is simply not sampled. The gaps in the mountain west and over open water are the honest limit of the network, not a fault in the app.
Yes. Playback loops the recent scans so you can see how a storm developed, and the alerts on the map rewind with it, so what you see is what was actually in effect at that moment.
It lifts each radar gate to the real height of the beam, using the standard 4/3 earth-radius refraction model, so you can pitch the map and see the vertical structure of a storm instead of a flat plan view. The vertical scale is exaggerated on purpose: true beam heights are tiny next to a 460 km sweep.
Turn on the inspector and move the crosshair over the radar. It reports the value under the cursor and the height of the beam at that range, which is the honest answer to "how high up is what I am looking at".

A network of trained storm spotters and chasers who report their positions and observations in the field. Their reports are ground truth for what the radar is only inferring from above.
